MS12-024 Causes RDP and ICA Errors on Server 2003 with Citrix

We recently applied KB2653956 to a number of Citrix servers in our environment. After reboot, we were unable to establish RDP connections to some of the servers. A remote reboot helped occasionally on some servers, but not all and not consistently.
Luckily, we had iLo connectivity to the boxes so we were able to look at the event logs, where we were seeing messages similar to :
EventID : 1014
Source : TermService
Description : Cannot load illegal module: C:\WINDOWS\system32\RDPDD.DLL
A quick search online led to the official Microsoft MS12-024 page, which had the following text under "Known issues with this security update" :
  • After you install this security update on a Windows Server 2003 SP2-based terminal server, Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) clients or Independent Computing Architecture (ICA) clients may be unable to connect to the terminal server. To resolve this problem, install hotfix 958476.
Downloading this hotfix from here and installing it followed by a reboot fixed all of our issues and restored RDP/ICA connectivity to these servers again.
